There are drug manufacturing companies that are working day and night to help us to win the fight against coronavirus. Here are 23 major companies that are researching vaccines and treatment drugs against Covid-19.

A mix of legacy drug makers and small start-ups ventured forward with plans to create immunizations or medications that target the infection caused by the novel coronavirus.

COVID-19, which was first detected in December in Wuhan, China, has since sickened nearly 5.4 million people worldwide and killed more than 345,000 as of 25th May.

In the U.S., many of the publicly traded companies that are initiating development have received money from two organizations:

- The Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, or BARDA, which is a division of the Department of Health and Human Services.

- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, or NIAID, a division of the National Institutes of Health.

A vaccine helps the body’s immune system to recognize and fight pathogens like viruses or bacteria, which then keeps us safe from the diseases they cause. Vaccines protect against more than 25 debilitating or life-threatening diseases, including measles, polio, tetanus, diphtheria, meningitis, influenza, tetanus, typhoid, and cervical cancer. – WHO

DNA vaccines are third generation vaccines, made up of small, circular pieces of bacterial DNA, plasmids. These plasmids are genetically engineered to produce specific antigens from a pathogen. DNA vaccines are effective in stimulating antibody responses to attack infectious diseases as they enter the body before they can infect cells, therefore acting as a preventive vaccine. They can be readily and cost effectively manufactured using off-the-shelf, well-proven fermentation technology.

RNA vaccines work by introducing an mRNA sequence (the molecule which tells cells what to build) which is coded for a disease-specific antigen, once produced within the body, the antigen is recognised by the immune system, preparing it to fight the real thing. RNA vaccines are faster and cheaper to produce than traditional vaccines, and an RNA based vaccine is also safer for the patient, as they are not produced using infectious elements.
